A second personality for the ‘Big Debate’
The Big Debate: are fruit and vegetables expensive?
Scheduled for Wednesday April 23 at 4:30pm with Marie-Amandine Stévenin, President of UFC-Que-Choisir, we are pleased to announce the presence of Christel Teyssedre, President of Saveurs Commerce et Primeur in the Lot.
“Fruit and vegetable prices are soaring”: the subject of fruit and vegetable prices is a regular feature in the news. But what does this really mean? What would be a ‘fair price’ for a kilo of tomatoes or apples? What does the ‘price’ of fruit and vegetables actually refer to, when there are fifty or so different products up for sale on the same shelf or stall? Moreover, seasonality, climate and bumper or poor harvests can all affect prices, sometimes on a daily basis. Consumers need to be given a reference point and told what lies behind the price of fruit and vegetables.

Global warming: towards the relocation of some production in France?
The Fruit and Vegetable Sector Sovereignty Plan , implemented by the government in March 2023, aims to gain 5 points of sovereignty in fruit and vegetables by 2030, and 10 points by 2035.
Between 2000 and 2020, France’s self-sufficiency rate in fresh fruit and vegetables fell from 64% to 50%. This change is the result of a decrease in production areas and the number of farms, combined with increased competition from neighboring producing countries, particularly Morocco, Spain and Italy.
Could the worsening effects of climate change in countries around the Mediterranean represent an opportunity for France to relocate certain fruit and vegetable production, or even to enable the development of new sectors not currently present in mainland France?
